Have you ever put 5 treats in your pocket in front of your dog, and then only given him/her 4 of them? They know you're holding out, right? I know mine does! And she doesn't give me peace until I give up that last one. Well, according to CNN, there's a reason for that; a reason we dog people have always known, but one that the rest of the world wouldn't believe. Now we can say, "but CNN said..." Enjoy!

No more will your pooch have to wrestle you for your Snuggie. Come on, admit it, you have one for yourself. And you're tempted to get one for the pup! ;-) So cute! [Update: In the commercial they show the Snuggie for Dogs on what looks to me like a Retriever, but on the site the 'large' size is listed as 16-20 inches long and for weights between 17-27lbs. Those measurements would fit my cockapoo, but I can't see it working for anything larger. ]

There is a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO(R) NATURAL CHOICE(R) COMPLETE CARE(R) Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO(R) MAX(R) Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier. Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO(R) dry cat food. Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO(R) dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Pets and Their Allergies
This is a good article about pets with allergies. There's just one thing I'd like to add...you should check with your Vet before giving your pet any medication, including Benadryl. My pup has seasonal allergies that get bad in the Spring and Fall, just like mine. So far, the hydroxyzine our Vet prescribed has been a huge help! We've had to adjust the dosage a couple of times over the years, but other than that, no worries. I give the pup one or two pills a day, depending on how severe her symptoms are, and generally after a month or so we wean her off them and wait for the next trouble season to arrive.

It's no secret that California is in dire need of money, but the governor is proposing that pets be considered 'luxuries' and therefore a 9% to 10% tax should be levied on services rendered by vets. While most of us can afford such a tax, others will be pushed beyond their ability to pay, resulting in the abandonment of many pets. Please protest this tax by calling Sacramento. The number is to an automated survey at the governor's office. The call is not free, but it It will take less than a minute and will cost very little. Dial: 916-445-2841 The numbers to press in response to the questions are: 1 - 5 - 1 - 2 (i.e., 1 = for English; 5 = to transfer to veterinary tax proposal; 1 = to choose to comment on the veterinary tax proposal; and 2 = to oppose the tax.
