Living Music History in Mahwah, NJ
Sooner or later, any fan of music becomes familiar with the name Les Paul. The long-time resident of Mahwah, NJ is getting ready to share his vast collection of historical material with the public. The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and a his hometown of Waukesha, Wis. will each get a part of the collection. Lucky them!

More Browser News...
Let the spin doctoring begin!
Looks like Microsoft is trying to undo the damage done when an employee let it drop that MS is planning to embed Internet Explorer into the OS and no provide standalone installations going forward. You can bet this isn't over...but in the meantime, I still suggest you check out Mozilla's Firebird. Give a few of the extensions a try too!

Along the same lines...first MS pays AOL $750 mil to settle the private antitrust suit, a.k.a. browser war. This, of course, included AOL renewing its royalty-free license to incorporate Internet Explorer into its own software for seven years. Now AOL and MS are talking about letting their IMs talk to each other. Could it be that Bill is going to buy AOL?

How Can Teachers Teach If They Can't Talk?
In order to avoid offending anyone, textbooks are not allowed to use certain words. Sounds OK, right? Before you decide, take a look at what is banned.
There's a new book out that goes into this topic in more detail: The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn

Browser News
For a while now I've been surprised at the lack of news about a new release of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. I have become a regular user of Mozilla's Firebird for several reasons, but the main reason is the tabbed interface - I love it! I figured IE would be updated soon with this cool new functionality. And it may be, but unless you are using the next gen of Windows, and can wait until 2005, you'll be out of luck.

Word is Microsoft will no longer release the browser as a stand-alone product, it will only be embedded in the OS. [Side note: isn't this what got them in trouble with the government?] Don't take my word for it - you can get it right from the horse's mouth. As you might imagine, this is creating a lot of discussion out in cyberspace. For me, it's all the more reason to support the Mozilla team. Competition is good, for everyone. Competition is vital for innovation.

Palm to buy Handspring
Wow! Just Wow!

Ok, a little more...a few years ago I would have thought this would have happened in the other direction. I'm kinda bummed, because I loved my Visor and now my Trio. And I really, really want the phone version of the Trio, but my carrier won't support it and I'm not thrilled at the idea of a new number...but I hope Palm doesn't screw up the cool toys Handspring has given us!

Tech Geeks Get Rewarded
First we heard that instead of turning your mind to mush, playing video games actually help to sharpen the mind, now it's reported that some of the people who really make the new movies great are getting a reward. It's being reported that Keanu Reeves is giving several million dollars to the 29 person team that created the awesome FX (special effects) in The Matrix series. Pretty cool, if you ask me...

AOL Admitting to Huge Decline in Membership
These rumors have been circulating for a while now, but this is the first time I've seen AOL admit to it in the press. Makes sense to me, there's really no outstanding benefit to locking yourself inside AOL's cyberwalls. If anything, there are problems for the people who try to view the web thru the AOL keyhole. At this point, the Internet is mainstream enough that less hand-holding is needed.
