Microsoft Pulls IE 5.5 Install Off Their Site Looks like Microsoft has decided that it is time for everyone to leave IE 5.5 behind and move to Internet Explorer 6. The good news is, IE 6 runs well and provides much improved support for web standards. Personally, I hope this also signals that the next version of IE is on it's way. If so, it had better include tabs - these are far and away my favorite feature of the latest Netscape and Mozilla browsers.

Macromedia.com Redesign - Update Last week I mentioned the brouhaha over Macromedia's redesign. Well, not only are they working on it, but they are keeping everyone informed on the process.
And Zeldman.com points out that the issues are not just "Macromedia's problem" - that the browsers also carry some of the responsibility.
This is good...no, this is great! You see, while many people have enjoyed taking shots at Macromedia over the problem, the reality is we all face these very same problems. And the general discussions this has sparked, as well as having the major players focused on fixing the problems, will payoff for all of us.
And Now For Something Completely Different From today's "The Morning News:"
"Question: When do I become an adult? – Alex Answer: When you’ve moved from credit card- to mortgage-debt." Amen to that! ;-)

New Day, Another MS Patch Ok folks, once more with feeling...there's a new patch out for Microsoft Windows. According to the report at Cnet.com:
"The flaw is in the Windows Script Engine that allows Windows to execute JScript code, or Microsoft's version of the Java scripting language that adds functionality to Web pages." The Cnet articles says that Windows XP is not affected, but Microsoft says it is, so I'd recommend that everyone load this one.
Yahoo and ComputerUser.com also reported on this issue.
Cisco Buys Linksys Reuters is reporting that Cisco Systems Inc. is buying Linksys, the makers of the wireless network hardware that I love, love, love! ;-) I hope this is good news...

Bad Sci-Fi Movie? I Wish!
"...you will be assumed by authorities to be the enemy if you so much as venture outside your home..." This has to refer to something happening in China, or maybe Russia, right? Nope, I checked 3 times - this is happening in the "land of the free, home of the brave." Scared? You should be. This isn't being done to us by "outside forces" or any "axis of evil"; it's being done to us by our own government.
Words From the Wise...
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. --Benjamin Franklin, 1759
Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. --Patrick Henry
Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. --Daniel Webster

Windows 2000 - New Patch to Install There's an advisory out warning of a buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft IIS 5.0 running on Microsoft Windows 2000. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT/CC) has stated that "An exploit is publicly available for this vulnerability..."; so it's important to load this patch right away.
Here's Microsoft's instructions on how to check to see if you are running IIS 5.0:
IIS 5.0 is installed by default on all server versions of Windows 2000. It is not installed on Windows 2000 Professional by default.
To check if IIS is installed on your system, carry out the following: Go to “Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services”. If the “World Wide Web Publishing” service is listed then IIS is installed. To learn more, and to install the patch, visit Microsoft.com.
Finally! A reporter who gets it - the David Wells book "controversy" is manufactured by the press, and is ridiculous. I really hope that in the long run, all this does is make the book (Perfect I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls,...) a best seller!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Tech Support at War Under the best of circumstances, tech support is hard work. I can't imagine what it must be like under battle conditions. This article explains a bit about the types of problems encountered, but this sentence is probably the scariest:
"If field technicians can't fix the problem, they swap the computers, which use a Microsoft Windows-based operating system, for new ones at a restocking location." Look, I'm not a MS basher, but after spending the weekend nursing a system that seems suddenly addicted to the BSOD, well, I have concerns. Of course, the real problem is that nothing is truly bug-free - and will never be. All we can do is make things the very best we can, and then be prepared.
Google Growth Fast Company author Keith Hammonds has posted an article that could have been titled the Art of Being Google. The "How Google Grows" article is long, but well worth reading. However, if you're pressed for time, this sums it up nicely:
"Most companies would sooner let temps into the executive washroom than let customers -- much less customers who can hack -- anywhere near their core intellectual property. Google, though, grasps the power of an engaged community." Hey TechTV, are you listening?
