Telecommute = Bad, Outsourcing Overseas = Good?
A recent conversation with unemployed/underemployed friends brought to light an interesting dichotomy...most job posting now state right in the ad that telecommuting is not an option. When companies are asked about this they invariably say that the position requires that the person has to be on site to interact with co-workers, attend meetings, etc.

However, these same companies are eager to outsource the very same jobs to overseas locations. Places in different time zones, people speaking different languages, who never, ever come into the home office. The reason companies give for this - it's cheaper. The "funny" thing is, if these companies would offer telecommuting to local employees, ones who could pop into the office as needed several times a month, they'd also see cost savings: people are willing to take a little less cash to skip the daily commute, the company could cancel the plans to move/build a bigger facility because desks should be "shared" on an as-needed basis, etc. Not mention the benefits of happy employees and keeping Americans employed.
