Without a Search Warrant
OK, so maybe you read the item about plans to jail hackers for life (see below) but figured it wasn't anything you'd ever have to worry about. Well, before you make your final decision, please read these NY Times articles: Pentagon Plans a Computer System That Would Peek at Personal Data of Americans By John Markoff and You Are a Suspect By William Safire.

Then, if you feel it's important enough, please write your reps and let them know what you think. Please don't wait.

When you do, please keep in this in mind...Using "only" the information they already had, government agencies knew the names of the maniacs who attacked before 9/11. Knew they were a problem. They just never did anything about it. And after the attack, those same agencies went ahead and approved renewal of the visas for those individuals. So I just have to ask, why are we wasting all this time and money, and being asked to/forced into giving up our rights as citizens, when we really need to so something simple: make what we already have in place actually work. It really all we need.

We cannot protect freedom by throwing away our rights.

Jail Hackers for Life?
From the "fear that which you do not understand" department, the US gov is looking to include the "Cyber Security Enhancement Act (CSEA)" in the Homeland Security bill. One of the things included in this "act" is a provision to jail hackers for life. According to Rep. Lamar Smith, "Until we secure our cyber infrastructure, a few keystrokes and an Internet connection is all one needs to disable the economy and endanger lives. A mouse can be just as dangerous as a bullet or a bomb."

Umm, no, no, and NO! Where's the Act that prevents people who don't understand an issue from making laws about that issue?

OK everyone, take a deep breath and calmly and patiently explain to your reps why this is misguided. Don't threaten, don't rant, but most of all, don't wait for someone else to do it.

More Security Trouble for Apache
Time to go get the latest Apache patch (actually, it's always a good time to check for security updates). There's a scoreboard memory segment problem that could lead to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks.

W3 See the Light on Patents
Good news for everyone - honest! Patent wars only serve to bring progress to a grinding halt. Oh, and to make lawyers richer, can't forget that! ;-)

The View is Changing
Sorry about the silence lately - RL (a.k.a. Real Life) has been keeping me busy, esp the move! In honor of my new digs, I plan to change the look-n-feel here. Just as soon as I get at least some of the boxes unpacked... ;-)
